Unilag and 37 Other Universities Increased School Fees More Than 300%

Unilag and other Nigerian Universities increased school fees by 300% plus

Unilag and over 30 other Universities nationwide have decided to jerk up their school fees by over 300%. The reason for this has largely been poor government funding (NAN). This was corroborated by ASUU Chairman, Dr. Deji Omole in Abuja on Monday 25th of June.
He gave a thumb down to President Buhari’s two years in office; he further cited that Nigerians have become poorer than ever in these years. He haped on the fact that the education sector has been in its lowest ebb of funding ever. This may not be unconnected with the fact that the children of the high and mighty either school abroad or attend private Universities here. Recall that the UNESCO recommendation for budgetary allocation for education in a developing country like ours is a minimum of 26% of annual budget but Nigeria’s has been a far cry from this over time. To this end, ASUU has posited that it would be difficult for Nigerian Universities to compete globally owing to inadequate funding of Universities and other schools over time.

For instance, findings have shown that University of Lagos (UNILAG) with ertswhile tuition of N14,500 would henceforth have their students pay N63,500 translating to about 337.9% increase. Other schools include: Ahmadu Bello University with tuition raised by about 51.9% from N27,000 to N41,000, University of Nigeria increased theirs by about 10.8% from N60,450 to N66,950 while Obafemi Awolowo University increased theirs by about 182.7% from N19,700 to N55,700.

Further findings revealed that Nnamdi Azikiwe University increased theirs by about 227.9% from N20,100 to N65,920, Bayero University, Kano, increased theirs by 53.9% from N26,000 to N40,000, University of Abuja increased theirs marginally by 7.6% from N39,300 to N42,300 and Usman Danfodiyo University increased theirs by 28.1% from N32,000 to N41,000. UI, FUNAAB, FUTA and more schools are still expected so keep in touch for further development on this.
